3 Cool Internships Wildcats Are Doing

Author Audrey Soemarno '27 is a Media & Communication major and works as a student assistant at 澳门马会传真, contributing to 澳门马会传真 News.

From learning how to keep Americans safe, to providing hospitality for people traveling to Providence and assisting others in need with support services. Here are three awesome internships 澳门马会传真 Wildcats have been up to this semester:

Thomas Maffei ’25: Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) - New England

Thomas is a Criminal Justice major at 澳门马会传真. “I learned about the (HSI) internship through visiting the HSI office on a field trip with my Homeland Security class at Johnson & Wales,” he shares. “During the trip, agents gave us a presentation highlighting the role and mission of HSI while also giving us students information on their internship program.”

What he does there: “My experience with the HSI internship day to day varies a lot, which is something I enjoy. I have spent a lot of time gaining hands-on experience in the participation of arrest and search warrant execution, surveillance operations used to identify and apprehend suspects, and different court proceedings. When I am not doing those things, I am in the office doing anything from putting search warrant bags together to organizing and sorting digital evidence from a suspect's device.”

Several skills he mentions from his 澳门马会传真 courses have helped Thomas in his internship. “Generally, I can recognize and understand some of the terminology and procedures used among agents during surveillance operations, and varying warrant executions,” he shares.

"I attribute this understanding to courses such as Criminal Procedure and Homeland Security. Other crucial courses that aided my HSI internship were Criminal Investigations and Criminalistics with Lab. Both Criminal Investigations and Criminalistics stress the importance of proper evidence processing at crime scenes and the multitude of different procedures.”

He recalls a keen moment he had in his internship: “During one search warrant that I was a part of, I was tasked with photographing evidence at the property that was being searched. Learning the basics of crime scene photography in my criminalistics with lab course gave me a good foundation to perform the task during my internship.”

Thomas has also learned from his supervisor: “My supervisor teaches me the different aspects of the job as a special agent and is always willing to answer many questions that I have. He often goes out of his way to ensure that student interns have valuable experience by finding every opportunity available to get us out into the field. The importance of making connections and networking with partnering law enforcement agencies is a priority of my supervisor, and his drive for helping interns with a passion for federal law enforcement is evident.”

Overall, Thomas has found interning at HSI to be a rewarding and fulfilling experience. He shares his proudest moment: “Being tasked with examining and sorting digital evidence from a Cellebrite extraction (cell phone extraction technology) in regard to a suspect's phone who was involved in a fraudulent crime ring." Thomas also shared his plans for his future: "After graduating from 澳门马会传真, I would like to pursue a career in a federal law enforcement agency.” He added, “Homeland Security Investigations and the United States Secret Service are on my radar.”

Jackson Harris ’24: Go Providence

Jackson Harris is a Hospitality Management major here at 澳门马会传真. He is currently doing an internship at . His journey in coming to 澳门马会传真 started as a culinary major. “We were driving home one day, and I was talking to my dad; I told him I didn't know if I wanted to sit in a kitchen for the rest of my life,” Jackson recalls. “I am such a people person, and I enjoy interacting with people. My dad said, ’One of the people I hired today, his major was Hospitality Management.’ So I thought why not? That conversation with my dad that day helped me find what I was looking for.”

He learned about the internship through a destination marketing class he took and was introduced to the organization by one of his professors. “He talked about Go Providence a lot and we did a few projects for them,” Jackson explains. “He mentioned how they used to do internships, and I asked him if there are any internships available. He said he’d let me know, and a couple months later he put me on an email thread with the president of the company. After that I was able to set a meeting with my now supervisor and I was able to get this internship all thanks to my professor.”

Jackson’s role in the office: “My day-to-day varies. My constant to-do list over the semester has been to pick up reports predicting hotel room availability or plugging information into Excel files about which hotel rooms are booked for upcoming events.” His internship involves various tasks of creating hotel room reports, attending meetings with hoteliers and assisting with marketing efforts.

Jackson provides an example of tasks at his internship. “For example, say USA Gymnastics is coming to Providence. They send an RFP, and they'll request several rooms. We'll go back to the hotel, and they will confirm vacancy of the rooms." He emphasized the importance of Excel skills and public speaking in his classes. “You'd be surprised how important the Excel classes I took were. I use Excel every single day, and tricks I learned at 澳门马会传真 or that I figured out mysaelf have helped me during my time here. And the speaking classes that I took have helped me enhance my communication skills in meetings or with clients in general. You can’t go into this industry without public speaking, and it's helped a lot.”

Jackson shares, “From full-time coaching and being involved in people-making relationships with country club goers, to working in an office and having to form relationships on the phone or in person is something I have enjoyed as a people person,” He finds this experience fulfilling, especially the impact of his work and the relationships built from this internship. His internship embodies a favorite quote: “Having an impact in the world with other people is a feeling like no other.”

“I’m very much open to any opportunities available to me in the foreseeable future,” Jackson concludes.

Madison Puckett ’25: Compass Group USA

Madison is a senior who is majoring in Psychology at 澳门马会传真 Charlotte. She is currently interning at . “I previously worked with Compass Group before I started my internship,” she explains. “They were willing to employ me for a paid internship and give me the hours I needed to get my credits.”

Madison shares her day-to-day tasks: “I oversee the Caf-to-Go station as a supervisor. I was the original spokesperson for this section of the Caf and helped them get it off the ground.” She continues, “I also work on bettering the relationships we have with students by arranging events and overall communication with them. When I am not heading the events, I work in the kitchen with my team, and we serve students the food they order throughout the day.”

Many aspects come into play when taking a job, and one important one is your supervisor. “Overall, my supervisor is hands-off for the most part,” Madison shares. “I have worked with Compass Group for around four years now, and they are aware of my work skills and ethic. Most of the time if they need something specific done or communicated, we directly meet or contact each other to make sure it gets done. It is easy to get a hold of them, but they also encourage figuring out your problems yourself. They once said, ‘Come to us with a problem with a solution attached,’ which is something I have been working to do.”

Madison continues, “Some of the skills I gained during my internship were task management, trend tracking and learning to foster partnerships to better serve clients with complex needs. I also strengthened my independent judgment in solving problems when working and dealing with customers and students.”

Madison’s proudest moment so far in her internship: “Putting into action an event that I had directly communicated with the student body that they wanted to participate in — something that was chosen by the students themselves," says Madison. She added, "I plan to work in Alaska after I graduate.  I have been offered a possible job as a counselor at a hospital there. After I save some money, I plan to travel abroad and live and work there in the future.”

Stay tuned to see more amazing student internships coming up next semester.
